The Development of Mathematical Thinking Infancy to Kindergarten: Bridging Children’s Informal Knowledge to Formal Mathematics

Description: In this session, we review research-informed developmental trajectories of major mathematical ideas as they emerge and progress through infancy to kindergarten entry. The presenter will specifically address skills related to numeracy, geometry, measurement, and algebraic thinking. Participants will engage in video cued discussions showcasing young children’s informal mathematical knowledge as it occurs during play-based scenarios and teacher-led conversations. At the end of the session, participants will explore hands-on activities to support and strengthen children formal skill development and acquisition of school ready mathematical competencies.
