Description
Title of Session: The Art of Engineering: Supporting Engineering Skills through Art Summary of Content: Using basic classroom art materials, such as paper, watercolors, paints and other manipulatives, the participants will understand how basic art activities can enhance engineering thinking. Track: STEM/STEAM-ART Content Priority (Principles): Engineering, Art, STEM, DAP, and learning centers. Workshop Objectives: Participants will be able to: • Discover how to adjust their everyday classroom art activities to support the development of engineering skills. • Apply those discoveries using hands-on materials, readily found in early childhood classrooms. • Brainstorm and record ideas for developing critical thinking during art with organized engineering terminology. Workshop Description (Format): “If you organize it, they will learn.” Building, constructing, critical thinking, and creating are all part of beginning engineering strategies for young children and can be supported through art activities. They will see how to extend basic classroom art activities into opportunities for providing support for beginning engineering skills. Participants will see how children experience engineering strategies for themselves with the use of the correct terminology and discussion of the steps. For example, organizing and constructing with a purpose can enhance creativity as well as build critical thinking skills. Come and be amazed with what you can do to support your students in the development of beginning engineering skills. Length of Session: Flexible (Preferably 60-90 minutes) Audio Visual: Power, Projection screen Audience: PreK-K, 1st teachers, administrators Room Set-up: Tables or Theatre-style
