Summary of topic: Exposing young learners to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) concepts and activities via stories helps foster their overall language development, especially their vocabulary, while also encouraging them to be observers, investigators, and problems solvers. During this session, you will learn how to plan and incorporate STEAM concepts and experiences into the stories you share with your students by exploring hands-on activities you will be able to use in your classroom.
Key Points and Objectives:
Discuss benefits of using literature during STEAM activities.
Share quality children’s literature where real world problems can be identified while using hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and math activities to suggest possible solutions.
Discuss language building strategies that can be used during STEAM activities.
Discuss how using play can support STEAM including the importance of scaffolding play using open-ended questions.
Discuss the importance of having a Growth Mindset and STEAM.
